LEARN
Anyone can be going through mental health issues, including yourself!
This could be due to stressors in their lives like quarantine, racial tensions, financial insecurity, work/school. Everyone is different and responds differently so it's important not to marginalize other people's problems. Furthermore, some people suffering from mental illness are high functioning, and can hide their symptoms well. This does not mean that they do not have mental health issues, or are not struggling. We just have to be more vigilant in seeing the signs. Although there are so many aspects of mental health we should learn about, these are some of my favorite resources in learning more.
DONATE
Donations to other causes like the BLM movement, or funds/supplies to local orgs like food pantries and homeless shelters also help!
Ways to Reach Out (during quarantine)
Although it is important to be supportive of friends and family, you are the most important priority. You are not their therapist, and their mental health should not come at the cost of yours.
Tell them you miss them
Send them a meme or tiktok that made you think of them
Ask to watch a movie or show together (netflix party or zoom)
Send them a care package
OTHER
Mental health advocacy is beyond sharing suicide hotlines and reaching out. It's related to food and housing security, acceptance and equality in all facets of identity (race, gender, sexuality, body size, etc.), destigmatization of mental illness, and more. Here are just some of the related resources, outreach and advocacy in any one of these is outreach and advocacy for mental health.
If any of y'all have any suggestions on any additional information or resources, I'd love to hear about them! DM me @steph.s.kim on instagram.
